Langkawi is the place of choice for one of the most renowned triathlons – Ironman Malaysia

The Ironman Langkawi, Malaysia 2019

Langkawi, The Jewel of Kedah, is an archipelago of over 99 islands in the Andaman Sea, which is about 30km off the mainland coast of northwestern Malaysia. Langkawi is never short of breathtaking scenery and majestic natural landscapes, which is why it is now a tourist destination with over 3 million tourists every year. On top of that, Langkawi is the place of choice for one of the most renowned triathlons – Ironman Malaysia, a series of races that put your endurance to the test.

Ironman Malaysia, Malaysia’s annual triathlon event, will once again grace the beautiful island of Langkawi this year. It is widely considered to be one of the most difficult one-day sporting events of our time. This year’s iteration is happening on 26 October 2019.

A Once in a Lifetime Experience

It is now the event’s sixth year in Langkawi and Malaysians can’t be happier, as the island’s stunning scenery is what makes the triathlon a lot more enjoyable and memorable. The Ironman Malaysia 2019 triathlon event is made up of three courses: Swim, Bike, and Run.

Swim: 3.8km
This year’s race course is a level above. It kicks-off at the beautiful Pantai Kok, a beautiful beach with crystal-clear waters and clean sands. After two laps, contestants will have to sprint to the next checkpoint and prepare themselves for a 180km bike ride.

Bike: 180km
This bike ride is like no other; contestants will cruise through mountains, beaches, villages and paddy fields. The two-loop bike course heads out of Pantai Kok towards Jalan Teluk Yu and eventually, Datai, Ayer Hangat and The Langkawi Falls. Once the 180km ride is completed, contestants will have to head to Mahsuri International Exhibition Center and get prepared to run for 42.2km.

Run: 42.2km
The contestants will be in for a treat, as this run course will showcase the best Malaysia has to offer: a scenic oceanfront view of Cenang Beach. Upon exiting Mahsuri International Exhibition Center, contestants will run along the side of the Langkawi International Airport runway and eventually, the beachfront of Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort and Spa.

An Event for Anyone and Everyone

Where there are participants, there are spectators too! Reaching the finish line is like a dream come true when it’s a big triathlon event like this, but it is much more memorable if you have your loved ones waiting for you on the other side.

Yee Sze Mun, an 81-year-old man, is by far the oldest Malaysian to ever finish a Malaysia Ironman race. He is never giving in to the ravages of time, determined to show the world that age is indeed just a number. After completing his 15th Ironman race, waiting for him on the finishing line is his biggest supporter – his beloved wife, who cheekily teased him for taking longer than he should.

Whether they’re your family members or friends, be there to support and encourage them, for they are the few who are brave enough to take on this challenging triathlon! If you do head to Langkawi to support them, getting an accommodation nearby the event venue will be ideal as it helps cut down on travel time.

The Smith House

Located just minutes away from Langkawi International Airport is The Smith House. It’s convenient for those who travel to Langkawi by flight. It is also not too far away from Pantai Kok. Furthermore, contestants will run along the airport runway during the Run Course, so you can cheer and give them a boost as they attempt to finish the triathlon!

The event date and venue have already been confirmed; all that’s left is to book a room!
